A woman is behind bars on what is allegedly her fourth DWI arrest. She is facing several criminal charges in addition to the drunk driving charge, including speeding, resisting arrest and child endangerment. Her daughter was apparently in the vehicle at the time of her arrest.
Louisiana police were first made aware of a possible drunk driver when someone called to report an erratic driver. According to the caller, the driver was speeding, leaving the roadway and causing many near collisions. A state trooper responded to the call and reportedly identified the vehicle, which the trooper says was traveling at 68 mph in a 55 mph zone. The law enforcement officer also reportedly observed the vehicle crossing the centerline of traffic.
The driver did not stop when the trooper attempted to pull her over, but eventually stopped at a residential home a short while later. The 29-year-old woman who was behind the wheel stepped out of the car, as did her daughter, who is 6 years old. The trooper claims that the woman smelled strongly of alcohol and had watery, bloodshot eyes. Police say that the woman initially refused to get into the police vehicle after her arrest and purportedly managed to escape soon after. She also supposedly kicked one of the responding troopers as she was escorted back into the vehicle.
Facing criminal charges of any kind is serious, but there is much more on the line when charged with multiple offenses. Louisiana defendants risk facing jail time and paying hefty fines, and those who are also parents might also lose precious time with their children. There is too much on the line to leave things up to chance. Instead, defendants should consider working on strong, criminal defense foundations as early on in the process as possible.
